April is probably our favourite time of the year, not only does the sun start to shine but it means we get to go to Milan for Salone del Mobile – and PJ uses any excuse for a Gelato!
The largest annual gathering of world renowned designers and manufacturers, launching their new designs and ideas. Visiting Milan is also a great opportunity for us to catch up with our suppliers, meet old friends and discover new designers.
So, what was new this year?
This year we saw a big influence of wood and recyclable products and an increase of the finishes available for old standards.
At a time where single use plastic is regularly making the news, many manufacturers are seen to be doing their bit in regard to using recyclable materials and unveiling new plastic technologies and an increase in use of recyclable polypropylene on new designs. Many manufacturers have been using recyclable materials for years without publicity, but it’s great to see that the increase spreading across the industry.
For many manufacturers, this year was about launching new finishes and colours, maximising and improving on the great designs they already have and marketing these again instead on launching anything new. Families of chairs were extended to add lounge or dining versions as well as stools, to provide a complete offering for an established design.
Quite often, a trip to Salone del Mobile or similar can remind you of existing designs and collections that you may have forgotten because the market appears saturated.
It was also evident that it’s not just the big companies that are setting trends; in fact, many of the smaller more targeted market manufacturers are coming up with superb quality designs, manufactured to the highest standards, incorporating new technologies and are now also investing in the best product designers from around the world. This is a big change, but how does the architect specifier find these new pieces? That is where the specialist knowledgeable furnishings and lighting dealer comes in the picture and where we can help, so please contact us for further details on anything you see and like.
