The new Willmott Dixon Cardiff offices in Cardiff Bay was a long and thoroughly thought through project. Willmott Dixon wanted to create a near perfect environment for their employees and the aim was to become a champion in forward thinking, innovative work spaces, the type of spaces their customers would want themselves.
Working with Powell Dobson Architects, our brief for the new Willmott Dixon offices was to create an open plan office that worked, with private meeting areas and a relaxing and vibrant communal area where employees could break from their desks and have informal meetings.
The most important and most discussed pieces of furniture going in to the new Willmott Dixon offices was the Sit-Stand desks; the result is that every person’s desk would be height adjustable, a total of 60 desks. The Stand Up system works with a counter weight pulley system which in this case were also adapted for the extra weight of 2 monitors per desk. Having Stand Up desks was important to Willmott Dixon as they understand the importance of encouraging employees to stay mobile throughout the day.
The Stand Up system also encourages interaction between colleagues and can help avoid related health problems in future. Recent studies have also reported that staff who stand for intervals throughout the day increase their productivity, health and ability to focus and show notable reductions in back pain.
The Willmott Dixon brand colours were a key feature throughout the scheme, integrated in the furniture and along the spinal storage wall that runs the length of the building.
The spinal storage wall was an important feature in the space as the entire office plan revolves around it. The spinal wall was made bespoke by a local company, it has a range of storage and facilitates the kitchen equipment in the communal ‘Bay Café’ area.
Glass meeting pods were sourced to enable impromptu meeting spaces in the main open plan office in addition to the formal enclosed meeting rooms.
The Cardiff Director and management commented:
“It’s been great having you on board on this one because you could really see what we were trying to achieve and help us get there!”
“It’s been a pleasure working with people that care. It’s so rare these days to find a customer focused organisation and you should be proud of what you and your people do. I’ve loved every minute of working with you and hope we can do more business in the future.”
